Youth Activist Scholarship Competition
In 2012, Daniel Beaty created I Dream, a nationally recognized social justice initiative that uses the tools of the arts, immersive group exercises, and trauma recovery to support young people to rewrite the story of race and class inequity in America, and create social justice projects to make that new story reality. I Dream has reached over 2000 young people in three cities across the nation, Watts, CA; Omaha, NE; and Boston, MA.
In late February 2017, I Dream in partnership with Children’s Theatre Company and The Rose Theatre will launch a nationwide campaign called I DREAM OF AN AMERICA WHERE…
We invite you to nominate youth activists ages 8 – 20 across the country; youth may also nominate themselves. The youth activists may submit five-minute videos profiling their activism and their dreams for America. Five young people will receive scholarships and be interviewed by Daniel Beaty. These interviews will then be made into a play that will tour the country to give voice to the youth of our nation. The teens will not only be interviewed about their activism, but also about their unique family backgrounds, their communities, and their dreams for the future of our country. As we face the results of this Presidential election, we can think of no better time to hear from the young people who will be the future leaders of our country. The campaign will officially launch in late February 2017.
